Of all the many different fishing techniques, surface fishing is by far the most exciting method when it comes to catching chub. Chub love surface and shallow running lures.  Although you can catch chub off the top all year round it's the warmer months that offer the more consistent surface fishing.

Catching chub off the top is the perfect way to fish in the summer months, but knowing where to start is absolutely basic knowledge.

Be very careful and quiet when approaching your swim. Chub is very cautious and fearful fish.

Some people say chub have an eye in every scale so can see You long before You can see him. Trees and grass hanging above the water – my best spots for surface fishing. Chub wait in there for falling down insects. It's like a natural restaurant for them. So why not try our luck in those places. But remember to be as quiet as possible.

Is always worth to try in places where water is running a bit quicker, and on the bed are some natural rocks, roots and weeds. Water in that swims is usually a bit colder and richer in oxygen – chub love that.

What time of the day is the best for chub surface fishing? I would say very early morning and a couple of hours before dusk when You can see lots of insect flying above the water.

Stepanow Fishing Insect is a nice lure with tiny legs and wings.

But with my experience, I noticed sometimes surface fishing can be really successful in the middle of the day in the full sunshine. But still, think the best time is two hours before the sun goes down. Sometimes You can locate big chub in the river but there is no chance to make him bite your lure. You can try all yours surface lures from lure box and still nothing. But don't worry You already know places, where they are so, is more than half of the success. Now You need to come back to that places in different time of the day when they will be feeding. Maybe very early morning or after dusk when is dark. Try your luck.

These reminds me of polarised glasses. Good polarised glasses are very important in surface fishing, they help You to locate fish in the water and track movement of your surface lure. I don't use any snaps to connect my lure to the line. Just tie my lure directly to the line. I prefer to use mono line but some of my friends use braid with fluorocarbon leader. The most important thing is do not lie line on water. Try to keep it up in the air – the only lure should be on the water surface. Which lure is the best? I think the answer is very simple – none. There is not something like the best lure. All depends on Your local water, wheater, time of the day and probably lots of different things. That's why is a good idea to have a selection of surface lures in Your box. Different colours, shapes and sizes. My favourite ones are from Stepanow Fishing – Insect and Big Insects. There is really big offer of all different shapes and colours, but the most important is they have tiny legs and wings what makes them look more natural for chub. I also like less known Bromba from Hunter. They have in offer really small lures from 20mm. Hunter sells also a very nice imitation of Beetles and Wasp. Dorado offers realistic lure -May Beetle, and Taps has some in offer as well. Of course I have to mention Lil'bug from Salmo available in two sizes 2cm and 3cm and few colour options.

How to fish? Cast your lure where You can see or expect chub and retrieve. Try slow retrieve, quicker, stop the lure on the water for few seconds – just play with it, have fun. That's the most important thing in lure fishing – having fun. Enjoy.
